Chorin Monastery

Monuments

Information

The Gothic Chorin monastery is a former Cistercian abbey near the village of Chorin, about six kilometres north of Eberswalde in the district of Barnim in Brandenburg. It was founded in 1258 by the Ascanian margraves and was of far-reaching importance on the northern edge of the Ascanian dynasty’s sphere of influence (border with the Slavs). Between secularisation in 1542 and the early 19th century, the monastery was left to its own devices, resulting in its devastation. Subsequently, the ruins were secured and the buildings partially reconstructed under the direction of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Today, the Cistercian monastery in Chorin is a typical monument of brick Gothic architecture. As part of the German-Polish Network of Monasteries, it is a place of supra-regional significance.
