Obelisk commemorating the installation of the 1st Border Post

The wooden pole was carved by Cpl. Adolf Wydrzyński - a carpenter from Volhynia. The white and red colours were painted by Ensign Stefan Kobek, who also made the white Piast eagle, while Lt. Władysław Cieślak made the inscription “Poland” and a directional sign towards Warsaw - 474 km and Berlin - 64 km. The act was commemorated by the drafting of a document which was placed in a corked bottle which was then tarred over and buried next to the pole. The report was found in 1947 by soldiers of the Border Guard Forces, and was later transferred to the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw. Today, a magnificent obelisk stands on the site of the former border post, commemorating that event. A copy of the document, which is so important to our National Memorial Area, is kept at the Engineering Forces Memorabilia Museum of the 1st Troops of the Polish Army. Available to visit.
