Water Reservoirs near Chlewice and Kaleńsk

Reservoirs created as a result of the exploitation of gravel deposits. The sandy islets found on these reservoirs are nesting sites for valuable and declining bird species, including the little tern, little ringed plover, Eurasian oystercatcher, common tern and common redshank. These islets are unfortunately submerged (at higher water levels) or attacked by predators from land (at lower water levels). In order to support the local bird species, so-called “floating islands” have been created on the Chlewice reservoir in recent years, made of iron pontoons covered with a layer of gravel and sand, anchored at four points. These activities have had an effect, the islands have become a breeding ground for birds, helping rare species survive.
